For one thing, there are several romance options in the game, but they're all deep, emotional, serious affairs and with other men. But the game kept grating against the kind of Passepartout I wanted to be. As soon as the game started, I immediately wanted to play him as a terrible valet who ignored his master, was contemptuous of all non-French people and culture, and just wanted to get into trouble, buy piles of useless junk, flirt with every woman we encountered, and hope Fogg would get sick and die so he would stop cramping my style. For me, in this game, it didn't work.Īlso, the game has the usual problem with roleplaying dialogue choices that I couldn't play the character the way I wanted. Like we can decide to "write" that the journey was smooth or that the journey was uncomfortable, and this just feels like a really weird thing for me to do as a player. For one thing, they're framed as us writing the main character's journal, which is fine by itself, but it sort of goes back and forth between presenting a scenario and asking us to choose what we're going to do, and actually letting us decide what happens. The game has some elements of roleplaying and dialogue choices, but they didn't work for me. Given what a huge part of the game the writing is, and how hit-or-miss it is, that's a problem. There were a few involved quest-type things, but I just couldn't be bothered to read them carefully or pay close attention to them. So I'll just say: I didn't like the writing. I don't think doing so would be enjoyable. I could do a better critique if I wanted to carefully go over the text a bunch more. Everything feels overwritten and silly to me. The writer put a lot of effort into imagining this world, and writing tons of stuff to flesh it out, but I still think she just didn't do a very good job. On the other hand, the story and dialogue, which is clearly where most of the effort went, is extremely long and tedious, and often feels kind of dumb. The things is that in spite of there not being very much in the way of actual game to play, what little there is actually very good. It just means that there's comparatively little game, and lots of story and dialogue.
